Strega Alberti Liqueur – Traditional Italian Recipe

The little golden glass that prolongs the end of the meal

The coffee is served and nobody feels like getting up. Strega arrives at that moment: a golden-yellow herbal liqueur, served well chilled in a small glass, which gives everyone a good reason to stay a little longer at the table.

What you will taste

• Texture: round and silky, it coats the palate without weighing it down.
• Aromas: fresh herbs, mint, aniseed and a breath of liquorice.
• Taste: bittersweet and balsamic, a warm finish that lingers.

How to use it

• Very cold, in a small tulip glass, right after the espresso.
• As a cocktail: shaken with fresh lemon juice, a dash of sugar syrup and ice.
• A few drops over a panna cotta or in the cream of a tiramisu.

Where it comes from

Strega was born in 1860 in Benevento, in Campania; its recipe is attributed to Carmine Vincenzo Alberti and his son Giuseppe. This secret recipe brings together about 70 herbs and spices, and it is saffron that gives the liqueur its golden-yellow colour. Its name refers to the legend of the witches of Benevento, the “streghe”, and the distillery still occupies its historic building near the station.
